Solidarités Jeunesses Vietnam (SJ Vietnam) is a young voluntary organisation in Hanoi. Its main activities are to set up work camps for short-term volunteers, projects for long-term volunteers, and programs for poor and disadvantaged (street-) children in Hanoi. SJ Vietnam welcomes hundreds of international volunteers from all over the world every year. Furthermore, SJ Vietnam receives help from countless local volunteers working together with the international volunteers.

GLEN participants join work at the office of SJ Vietnam. They are responsible for project management and fundraising in the following two projects. The Youth House School project helps street children who are living under Long Bien Bridge along the Red River. In the National Pediatric Hospital disadvantaged children are supported by the Bring a smile project. GLEN participants conduct projects from the design till the actual implementation. In collaboration with secretaries and the accountant, they help to run the project budgets effectively. Another area of work is to find ways of saving expense in order to make other activities possible. Besides, they write fundraising strategies for the SJ Vietnam and keep contact with donors and sponsors. The newsletter for informing donors and sponsors about ongoing projects is an important responsibility for GLEN participants as well. The organisation is looking for successful fundraisers with a positive attitude and lots of energy. GLEN participants get accommodation for a negotiable price and will be supported by members of the staff with needed skills and working materials.

The scheduled project time is three months between July and October.

The preparatory phase of the project will take place in English. The GLEN project team will be composed of one German/Swiss and one Czech participant.

The „Foundation for Democratic Process“ (FODEP) is a respected non-partisan and non-governmental organization countrywide. It was founded in 1992 in order to do mainly election monitoring, but also advocacy, lobbying, research and voter education. It also tackles issues of HIV/AIDS and governance, resolution of conflicts among political parties, strengthening of political parties etc. The democracy education project addresses the young generation that will have the chance to vote in the next elections. Students, mainly in rural areas, need more information about the qualities, limits and structural components of real Democracies.

The project should help Zambian students to better understand the role of citizens in democracy and the limits of democracy. A more precise and diversified picture of aspects of democracies should thereby be facilitated (in addition to simplistic definitions of democracy like „rule of the people“ or „rule of the majority).

GLEN participants will work in two areas: production of educational materials and planning and conduct of seminars and workshops. They will create education materials at the FODEP office in Lusaka. The materials and methods, good-practise and know-how from the seminars shall be used in the future. After the preparatory period GLEN participants will organize and conduct seminars at secondary schools in a province of their own choice. The seminar topics might be a definition of democracy, its characteristics and mechanisms and civic education with special reference to Zambia. It is highly recommended to focus more on quality than on quantity by working for a longer time with only few classes.

The project is scheduled to run between August and October.

The preparatory phase of the project will take place in English. The GLEN project team will be composed of one German and one Czech participant.

Mathare Valley, a suburb of Nairobi, has a population of over 600,000 people. It is one of Africa’s largest slums with many poverty related problems (water supply, electricity, garbage, crime, unemployment, drug abuse and HIV / AIDS).

The “Mathare Youth Sport Association” (MYSA) started in 1987 as a self-help community development project. Today it is the largest youth sports and community development organisation in Africa, with over 100 leagues involving over 15.000 boys and girls in both below and above 18 years of age categories, in over 1.000 teams. In addition to sports the MYSA staff, volunteers and members are involved in community service activities such as slum garbage cleanups, HIV/AIDS prevention, child labour prevention, leadership training, photography and video graphics training and in helping to feed and free kids from jail.

Since the use of sport as a tool to mobilise youth and to facilitate community development is the concept, all MYSA members participate in official communal work projects.

This project is based on achievements of GLEN projects between Inex-SDA, MYSA (Mathare Youth Sport Association) and Streetfootballworld Berlin from 2005 to 2007. The objectives are to continue the South-North exhange of information and experience between organisations involved, and to increase awareness of the public and governments about the role of football in the South. The GLEN participants will continue the work of previous years in fotography, videography, graphic design and PR. One participant will assist the “Shootback” movie team with photography, film making and production as well as with workshops on methods and techniques. The second participant will be involved in graphic design, the design of the MYSA newsletter, postcards design, the production of a PR brochure, magazines etc. These materials are important for marketing, fundraising and educational purposes.

GLEN participants need to be able to cope with pressure since the environment is quite rough. An interest in sports is another requirement for taking part in this project.

The project time will be from July to October 2008.

The preparatory phase of the project will take place in English. The GLEN project team will be composed of one German and one Czech participant.

The project is based on the achievements of the Football for Development project carried out by “Search and Groom” (S&G) in Lagos over the last four years. S&G is an NGO that uses sports to bring forward a range of community oriented projects. It aims at improving living conditions of vulnerable groups of people (youths, homeless, unemployed, drug rehabs) in poor areas of the Nigerian capital. S&G is a symbol of the Nigerian youth, sports and peace development started in 2003 in Ajegunle, a slum in the Lagos suburb. Today, the project has spread its message across many areas of Lagos. Taking advantage of the big popularity of football among people S&G decided to use sports as a means for social campaign, harmony and community regeneration. S&G seeks to provide capacity building programs, training, rehabilitation, employment, sports and recreation opportunities for Nigerians.

The objectives are to continue the South-North information and experience sharing and the exchange between organisations involved, in order to increase awareness in the public and in the government on the role of football in people’s lives.

It is a great challenge within these youth organisations to integrate Vietnamese adolescents into society and to encourage their social engagement. Specifically, the methods of education for youths could provide approaches for this purpose.

GLEN participants will help in several fields. One GLEN participant will work on accurate football training schedules, with the intention of establishing a good inter personal relationships with the target group. The second participant will help establish an IT learning ground for youth, volunteers and staff of S&G with a focus on web programming and basic computer applications. S/he will design training programs with emphasis on various basic computer applications and appreciation programs. Fundraising will also be part of the daily routine of the GLEN participant, in order to build a strong base for future support partnerships and co-operation for the project world wide. Several events in the the schedule of S&G can be highlighted concerning the work of GLEN participants – holiday camp program (August), start of the Street League season (October), international children´s day of broadcasting (November 11th), world AIDS day (October 1st). The Czech participant is to also plan and organise clinics and workshops regularly or at agreed intervals with coaches and trainees within the project with a focus on technical work.

The project is scheduled to run three months between August and October. The preparatory phase of the project will take place in English. The GLEN project team will be composed of one German and one Czech participant.

Masuku High School is a rural boarding school in Southern province, run by the “United Church of Zambia”. It is situated 76 km away from the next bigger town, Choma. The school faces many challenges such as lack of teachers or teaching resources. There are about 450 students in 8 classes from grade 8 to 12,taught by 11 teachers. Each teacher works about 30 periods per week, plus extra work in afternoon activities for the students. With two voluntary teachers it is possible to distribute the workload more evenly and to contribute more to the afternoon activities for students.

GLEN participants will teach natural sciences or English for one term (3 months). They will be in the same position as other teachers at the school, which includes a similar workload of about 20 lessons of 40 minutes per week. That will give them the possibility to experience the daily routine of the teacher’s life. Other duties of GLEN participants are supervisional duties. Further a wide range of afternoon activities is offered by the teachers. This covers drama, soccer, volleyball, chess, culture, choir or agricultural activities. In addition, the GLEN participants will take part in weekly assemblies. There is space for own creativity in using different pedagogical methods (experiments, group work, discussions, etc.) and an ability to produce educational materials with limited resources will be most welcome.

The project is scheduled to run three months between July and October 2008. The preparatory phase of the project will take place in English. The GLEN project team will be composed of one German and one Czech participant.

6. Project: Integrated tourism for sustainability, Mongolia

Number: 3307400214

Vocational Field: hospitality and tourism management

Field of Study: tourism management, environmental management, social science

Language: English, Mongolian would be an asset

Number of Participants: 2

Classification of the Work and Study Project (Numbers): 8, 11

Every year more tourists are attracted by the beautiful landscapes of Mongolia. Especially in rural areas tourism has a high potential to generate income. Tourism facilities develop uncontrolled because strategies for tourism development are missing. Most tourists depend on the big tour operators, who benefit most from tourism. For tourism to develop in a sustainable way community based tourism activities are crucial. The NGO "Association of Hovsgol Tourist and Information" (AHTI) in Murun aims to develop and promote sustainable tourism in the Northern part of Mongolia. In Hovsgol Aimag the main destination is the Hovsgol lake, which attracts many tourists coming to Mongolia. The organisation makes different people be involved in tourism and tries to contribute to a common strategy of tourism development in Hovsgol Aimag. Its “Tourist Information Center” (TIC) is the central instrument to reaching these aims.

GLEN participants support AHTI and the TIC to develop sustainable tourism activities. The position of the AHTI is not yet strong enough among people from the region who earn money with tourism. Therefore, it is necessary to find a strategy and mechanisms to encourage membership and active involvement in the organisation. Update of information for tourists, to serve customers in the TIC, fundraising activities for the organisation, the conduct of seminars and workshops, cooperation with local students of Tourism Management and to strengten the links with other organizations being active in the field of tourism are possible fields of activity for the GLEN participants. For future GLEN participants it is recommended to start the preparation of the project before leaving with fundraising for the project.

The scheduled project time is between July and September. The preparatory phase of the project will take place in English. The GLEN project team will be composed of one German/Swiss and one Czech participant.

PUMAP the "Projecto Universitario em Maputo" (University Project in Maputo) is a voluntary project and was established in 2004 under the patronage of TESE. The organisation supports international student exchange between European and (lusophon) African students on different levels:

Charity: through the cooperation with charity organisations that relief the burden of homeless and sick children (especially HIV and tuberculosis). Education: through the cooperation with local universities. A special focus is put on public universities, since their standard is decisively lower compared to private education institutions.

Business promotion: through the creation of networks among the business community, civil population and the university sector. The aim to raise entrepreneurial awareness for a "Corporate Social Responsibility" plays an eminent role.

Within this framework the student body of the "Universidade Eduardo Mondlane" founded the organisation" PRUCOM" (Projeto Universitario e communitarion). "PRUCOM regularly" organises transportation from universities to charity organisations (kindergartens, schools, hospitals etc.) in very poor suburbs of the capital Maputo to support these in their daily work. This aims at sensitisation of students and young executives to better understand the common problems of their country and to strengthen the motivation of the visited organisation through solidarity.

Main goal is the mobilisation and sensitisation of teenagers and students in Maputo for local poverty reduction. In the first phase of the program GLEN-participants will visit some of the organisations in the suburbs of Maputo where they will experience extreme poverty. Later, they will mobilise project volunteers at universities, organisations and enterprises.

The partner PUMAP and PROCOM agreed to support the GLEN-participants logistically and will assist in organisational aspects to get in contact with different organisations. The GLEN-participants will work in an international team and will be supervised by a PRUCOM-coordinator with whom they will develop a working plan.

The period for the project can be between July and December 2007

The preparatory phase of the project will take place in English. The GLEN project team will be composed of one German, one Polish and one Czech participant.

2. Project: Democracy Education for Secondary Schools, Zambia

Number: 3306400110

Zambia is a landlocked and vast country in southern Africa. In 1991, as a result of a protest movement it entered the path of democratisation after two decades of a one-party rule. The”Foundation for Democratic Process” (FODEP), located in Lusaka, is Zambia’s leading election monitoring organisation. This non-partisan NGO guided Zambia during its whole democratisation process since 1991. Besides election monitoring, FODEP is dealing with the issues of voter education, lobbying (e.g. for a new constitution and a new electoral system), HIV/AIDS, governance, resolution of conflicts among political parties, strengthening of political parties etc.

In December 2006, FODEP will launch its new three year strategic plan, which will rather concentrate on political education than on election monitoring. The proposed project will address the next voter’s generation, particularly students of secondary schools – the key factors within democratic societies. Mainly, in rural areas political information is scarce. The proposed project, therefore, wants to inform about the details and background of democratisation, illuminate the role the citizens obtain in a democratic system by showing the responsibilities and limits of democracy. The widespread but rather simplistic slogan of democracy as the “rule of the people” or “rule of the majority” is to be diversified and put into perspective.

The GLEN participants will have the task to produce education material and, later, organise seminars in secondary schools in a province of their own choice. Their strategies could incorporate the discussion of experiences with their own democratic traditions. They could also ask what are and had been the challenges for their own countries within the process of democratisation. The danger of super-implanting western democracy models could be made vivid by looking into African democratic traditions in comparison to European conventions.

The project is scheduled to run between July and December 2007.

The preparatory phase of the project will take place in English. The GLEN project team will be composed of one German and one Czech participant.

Mathare Valley, a suburb of Nairobi/ Kenya, has a population of over 600,000 people. It is one of Africa’s largest slums with many poverty related problems (water supply, electricity, garbage, crime, unemployment, drug abuse and HIV / AIDS).

The “Mathare Youth Sport Association” (MYSA) started in 1987 as a self-help community development project. Today, it has more than 15.000 participants and is one of the most successful community development organisations on the continent. MYSA runs football leagues for both boys and girls. Despite the devastating circumstances faced by the slum kids, there is much potential to be tapped and stimulated. MYSA creates equal opportunities for its members, emphasises democracy and gender equity, and creates role models. MYSA uses football as a platform to relay social values and facilitate sustainable development in the community. In Kenya, football is the most popular sport and captures a brought audience. Consequently, any message delivered through football is sure to reach many people.

Football promotes unity and solidarity. It erases differences in race, religion, gender, economic background or age. Especially, for the youth it constitutes a powerful means of social interaction and integration. Sports and community service are MYSA’s core values. A spirit of volunteerism and the approach of using sport as a tool to mobilise youth and facilitate community development is the concept. Apart from sports, all MYSA members participate in official communal work projects.

This project is based on achievements of GLEN South-North projects between Inex-SDA, MYSA and Streetfootballworld Berlin in years 2005 and 2006. A very valuable and enriching cooperation has been established and out of the strategic results of it is the special accent of the Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the programme Sport for development. Tour of MYSA team in the Czech Rep. is part of it. MYSA, one of the biggest and most successful African NGO on this field, has become a crucial partner at the moment.

The objectives are to continue the succesful cooperation twith MYSA, to increase awareness of the public and governments about the role of football in lives of people in the South, to stress the role of women in connection to football.More concretely, the work of 2 participants will pick up again the work of Glen-tandem from the last year. One participant is supposed to work on the field of fotography, videography and graphic design. The MYSA documentation project has already started, and there is a need to continue this succesful work. The second participant (preferably a woman) will work as a trainer of girls teams, cooperating with MYSA coaches in the zones. She will connect these activities with workshops about gender roles, too. One participant will help the Shootback team and children in the community with photography, giving them workshops about methods and techniques. This participant can also contribute designing the MYSA Newslatter, postcards, PR brochures etc. All these materials are important for fundraising as well as eductational purposes (in the South as well as North). The second participant (preferably woman) will contribute with coaching the girls soccer team and providing workshops with gender equality, role of woman in society etc.

The GLEN-participants will be part of the “Shoot Back” project which documents all MYSA activities for their PR work. Publicity is important to spread the programme philosophy for replication and to attract sponsorship. Interns, with their technical, methodical and specialised skills can be a valuable source for inspiration for the implementation and further development of the documentation project. Stable characters are required for this project. Mathare Valley is not the dreamy African idyll but can rather be a rough environment.

The project time will be from July to December 2007.

The preparatory phase of the project will take place in English. The GLEN project team will be composed of one German and one Czech participant.

4. Project: Cultural Youth Education, Vietnam

Number: 3306400217

Vocational Field: Photography, Performing Arts, Youth Work

Field of Study: Cultural Education, Social Work, Media Education, Project Management

Language: English, Vietnamese (desirable)

Number of Participants: 2

Classification of the Work and Study Project (Numbers): 2, 6

Vietnam is a socialist country but experiences economic and social opening since the eighties. This has lead to a transformation of the entire society. Adolescents are particularly affected by changes implicating the danger of social disintegration.

Since 2003 the "Association of Cultural Education for Children and Adolescents Saxony-Anhalt e. V." (LKJ) in Germany cooperates with the "Central Youth Organisation Ho Chi Minh Vietnam" and their executive division for international cooperation (CYDECO) and the Vietnamese Youth Centre for Tourism (VYCT).

It is a great challenge within these youth organisations to integrate Vietnamese adolescents into society and to encourage their social engagement. Specifically, the methods of education for youths could provide approaches for this purpose.

As part of the project "Cultural Education as a Method to Encourage the Engagement of Youths" a variety of different forms of youth work will be promoted because creative methods improve the self-esteem and social engagement of young people in Vietnam. In this context cultural work refers to the support of talents in different cultural categories (music, theatre, dance, literature, etc.). The emphasis of the project lies on social cultural aspects as well as the use of educational methods and cultural media as an opportunity to deal with social issues and challenges.

The interns can benefit from a GLEN project conducted in 2006. In cooperation with the Vietnamese partners the GLEN participants will create a concept to prepare, carry out and analyse a pilot project on cultural education. Additionally, they will organise workshops on theoretical backgrounds of cultural education as capacity building for multipliers in Vietnamese youth work.

The participants will be supervised by local coordinators in Hanoi, Tu Nga Pham and the LKJ Saxony-Anhalt e.V. They will have access to the necessary resources and will gain a deep insight into the local conditions and requirements. The experience to realise a project in a developing country will help the participants to learn methods of project management and to acquire intercultural competence. It is expected that the GLEN interns present a final report in Vietnam as well as in Germany.

The project is scheduled to be implemented for the period August to December 2007.

The preparatory phase of the project will take place in English. The GLEN project team will be composed of one German and one Czech participant.

5. Project: Sustainable Education with Music, Zambia, Germany, Czech Republic

Vocational Field:

Field of Study: Education, Natural Sciences, Music

Language: English

Number of Participants: 2

Classification of the Work and Study Project (Numbers):

Zambia is considered one of the world's poorest countries with major development obstacles. Zambia has 12 million inhabitants with 3/4 living below the poverty level and 60 % living in rural areas. The community Masuku is located in a rural region of southern Zambia. It has an elementary school, a boarding high school both run by the „United Church of Zambia“ (UCZ). The closest town is Choma – 70 km away, connected only by a dust road. Masuku would be a very small village; were it not for the teachers and students living here. The major source of community mobilisation and external support are the church based networks. As the national power grid ends 30km from Masuku, there was no electricity until 2005. This was a major obstacle to the development of the school and the community as such. Teaching and preparation was restricted to daylight hours only. In cooperation with the „Ecumenical Academy of Prague“ (EPA) UCZ carried out a developmental project „Water and Electricity for Masuku High“. During this project solar panels were installed to provide the power for the school. Another big problem for the school is a constant lack of teachers, especially in the field of natural sciences. Therefore, a GLEN project was proposed as a result of cooperation between EAP and INEX – SDA, the Czech GLEN partner organisation, and currently takes place. The proposed project is seen as a continuation of the current project and will add a new dimension to it by the south-north-exchange. The aim of the project is to assist the school in terms of providing teachers and at the same time introduce intercultural exchange and global education.

The participant going to the North will be a teacher of Masuku High School, teaching mathematics, music and physical education. He leads the choir and is coach of the Masuku High School football team. In Europe he will present his country and his school.

In the Czech Republic, he will hold presentations on Zambian and African culture in schools and youth clubs in several regions. His interest in sports and music will help him to create interest in his country and to get in closer contact with the people.

In Germany, he will participate in the ongoing project of the Gossner Mission „To learn from diversity“ (German title: „Aus Vielfalt lernen“). Together with other Africans he will visit schools to talk about his cultural background and the situation in his country. The aim is to give German pupils the possibility to get a firsthand and differentiated view on Africa and its people. Besides, he will be dedicated to closer cooperation with a choir or a local band. A public performance or concert is envisaged as the outcomes of this project aspect. The establishment of a long lasting exchange of ideas and joint performances in Zambia and Europe is the long term aim.

In Zambia the German and Czech participants will not only teach science. They will also present European views and culture. Many students and members of the local community, including teachers have a very vague idea of how Europeans live.

Equipment is very scarce in Masuku, but experiments are highly appreciated by both, pupils and teachers. The European participants should be able to come up with simple experiments based on easily accessible items of everyday use. As classes are expected to have 50 to 80 pupils, finding a compromise between using new interactive teaching methods and handling such big classes will be a great challenge. The participants of the north will be hosts to the Zambian participant. Therefore, interest in sports and music is welcome. An existing relation to a music group or choir, which is open to influence of Zambian music, would be highly appreciated.

Teaching experience is welcome but not absolutely necessary. Enthusiasm and the ability to motivate people are much more important. The south project phase is connected to the third term of the Zambian school year and has to take place during the period of 1st September to 31st November 2007.

The benefit of the project being south-north project is that the southern participant is a teacher in Masuku High and will continue teaching in the School after his return. He can share his experience from his stay in Europe with his students on long-term basis. Unlike the GLEN participants he does not only stay for three months. He can also portray the "African view" of European life, which will be most probably different form the "European view" brought by the North participants. The experience he gains in Europe will have benefit to the Masuku High and to the community in general.

Condition for European applicants is the willingness to prepare and to assist the stay of the Zambian participant before and during his visit to Europe between April and June 2007. German participants from Berlin are particularly welcomed.

The preparatory phase of the project will take place in English. The GLEN project team will be composed of one German and one Czech participant.

The Salesian Sisters are a religious Congregation spread all over the world and fully dedicated to education. They have been present in Zway (East Shoa Zone, Oromiya Region, Ethiopia, ca. 60.000 inhabitants) since 1987. Particular, young poor women with no future perspective are in the focus. In Zway the Salesian Sisters run several projects, like a kindergarten, a feeding program for malnourished children, a primary school, a literacy program, informal education programs for young people and a college for fashion design and information technology.

Education is the key to economic and business development. Connected to the college there is a shop to sell textiles and garments produced by the students. It is planned to open a new shop in Zway, and for the future years several new shops for the college graduates are planned to support them in business starting. In these shops the students and graduates can display and sell their products, as a first direct exposure to the market. Further, they can display their skills for promotion purposes. It is envisaged to create market sensibility and gain experience to be able to run independent businesses.

The new shop shall have two departments, one for fashion and one for IT. Preparing the pupils for running the shop is the main task for the GLEN participants, introducing the pupils to business skills and management shall be the focus of the work.

GLEN participants will support the group of graduates involved in the shop to organise their activities in a professional and efficient way. This includes account and record keeping, business management, marketing. The GLEN participants might also offer vocational trainings for the third year students additionally to the work in the shop. Teaching experience is desirable.

MEA is committed to introducing school based reforms and innovations to the Mongolian education system. It has been lauded as one of the premier NGO’s in the field of teacher training and professional development in the country. MEA is based in Ulaanbaatar. It has regional offices in seven other provinces and is partnering with more than 70 schools and 50 kindergartens in the country. Mongolia is a country with low population density. A big issue is huge migration from rural to urban areas. Almost half of the population lives in Ulaanbaatar, the capital city. Schools in the cities exceed their capacity limits. The consequence is less quality, low school enrolment, school drop outs leading to increased child labour in some urban areas.

Literally, there are no chairs for children to sit on and no books to read. Furthermore they have no opportunities to develop themselves, learn proper behaviour or spend their free time effectively. The school libraries are not comfortable, far away and there are neither enough books available nor are the existing ones new or interesting. Many children stay outside, play basketball without a court or play PC games in a dirty, unhygienic environment where air and light is limited. The local authorities and communities lack initiatives, collaboration and contribution to tackle these issues. MEA’s “Book Ger” project aims to contribute to solve this issue and promotes community collaboration and resources to succeed.

The GLEN participants will assist the project in its implementation. Among the tasks will be: ideas for decorating and updating inside libraries and reading rooms, developing handbooks and guidelines for community libraries, organising creative free time activities, preparing reading contests and competitions for children to develop their skill through books, developing information leaflets about the ‘Book Ger’ activities, writing articles about the project for local newspapers, updating and editing of MEA’s websites, improving MEA staff’s English skills as well as organising PR and fundraising events.

The volunteer tandem will mainly work in the headquarters. MEA is able to provide a work station with internet access and help find accommodation. Furthermore, MEA will assist in acquiring the basics of the local language and will give an insight into the customs and traditions of the Mongolian people. MEA is interested in mutual upgrade of professional skills as well as intercultural exchange of information and experiences. The GLEN project is a possibility for MEA (and furthermore for many other people) to meet young Europeans and to mutually share experiences. Intercultural learning is very important and can help our society to better understand global interdependencies. MEA identifies itself with the GLEN ideas of intercultural exchange and raising public awareness through the work in a developing country.

The internship is scheduled for the period from July to December 2007.

The preparatory phase of the project will take place in English. The GLEN project team will be composed of one German and one Czech participant.

2. Project: Carpenter, construction with clay, Republic of India
Field of Study: Architecture, Construction, Preservation and Restoring Buildings
Language: English, Tibetan is advantageous
Number of participants: 2

Ladakh is one part of the muslim-dominated Indian state Jammu and Kashmir and borders with the conflict regions Afghanistan and Northern Pakistan. The local people of this region, the Ladhikis, are struggling to preserve their own culture and language. The city of Leh is situated in the Himalaya close to the border with Tibet. Especially architecture is very much based on Tibetan traditions. In the Chinese part of Tibet many historic building got lost. For this reason the non-profit organization “Tibet Heritage Fund” (THF), Berlin, wants to save the cultural richness of Tibet by preserving the historic buildings of Leh. After supporting projects in Tibet for years the THF got involved in surveys about the historic parts of Leh in 2003, starting the “Leh Old Town Initiative”. The project needs urgently an accurate documentation and the restoration of existing buildings. In this process locals learn how to use traditional handicrafts and the THF shares the knowledge about Tibetan architecture that was gained in Lhasa. Many local citizens are ready to contribute to the restoration through a “cost-sharing” model. The local government is also interested and wants to carry out a long-term restoration programme. The first step will be to measure and analyze the old buildings before the planning phase starts. The GLEN-participants will help in this process and can even realize their Master- or Research-Projects about Tibetan architecture, preservation of monuments and construction in general. GLEN-scholars should have basic knowledge in measuring buildings and evaluating structural damages. They will have to face difficult working conditions. The project will be realized between July and October 2006. The preparatory phase of the project will take place in English. The GLEN project team will be composed of one German and one Czech participant. For the German place, applications from Sachsen are particularly welcome.

3. Project: Music Development for HIV Education in Rural Areas, Republic of Mozambique

Vocational Field: Sound Engineer Field of Study: Public relations, Music, Cultural Sciences, Social Work Language: English; Portuguese highly recommended Number of participants: 2 Massaca is a small village with a weak infrastructure and an instable electricity and water supply one driving hour away from the capital of Mozambique, Maputo. One of the problems that the country has to face is the outrageous number of HIV-infections – up to 700 people are infected per day. Therefore, HIV-education is needed urgently. Expensive TV-spots do not reach the rural population. In addition, people often cannot read or write and do not understand the usual ways of spreading information. Thus new teaching methods, such as images, stories and songs, have to be created in order to obtain results with the campaigns. The Mozambican non-profit organization “Pro Music” aims to support local musicians in and around Massaca, offers consulting for them, a free information magazine and fights against music pirates. It has a vehicle for the project, an Hanomag that was turned into a mobile sound studio, and various bicycles. GLEN-participants will help to create and maintain the internet portal which will connect local musicians in the future and promote the national music in the international music business. In addition they will help to start up a training centre for young sound engineers to help them with studio and live-productions. The most important task will be the so-called “Info-Mobile”. It will combine the songs of local musicians with video productions to spread information about the HI-Virus in the different dialects and languages spoken in the region. The project wants to conserve traditional Mozambican music and fight against the HI-Virus more efficiently at the same time. The GLEN-participants will be especially needed for the public relations of the projects and to create print- and video-presentations. The preparatory phase of the project will take place in English. The GLEN project team will be composed of one German and one Czech participant. For the German place, applications from Sachsen are particularly welcome.

4. Project: “Masuku High” – Sustainability Education in Practice, Republic of Zambia

Field of Study: Teaching of science (Physics, Mathematics), environmental sciences, rural development
Language: English
Number of participants: 2

Masuku community is located in a very remote and isolated area in one of the poorest provinces of Zambia with 12.000 inhabitants. It has only one elementary, one secondary school (350 students) and one hospital for the whole area. Because of its remoteness the region is under-served by the Zambian state and the international donor community. People do not have access to electric power supply and use hand pumps to draw small quantities of water of poor quality for the immediate personal use from the two existing wells. Due to the lack of electricity teaching time is restricted to day light hours and donated equipment such as photocopiers cannot be used. The Czech partner organization “Ecumenical Academy Prag” (EAP) has launched a project in cooperation with the United Church of Zambia in order to improve the power supply and the inadequate water system that prevents the region from developing. The project is called “Electricity and Water for Masuka Community” (EW) and will try to improve the teaching hours and the quality in general. Additionally they will try to support the local health care. GLEN-participants are asked to connect the real practice experienced in the project with education in the field of sustainable development and protection of the environment as teachers at the high school level. They will teach ways of dealing with limited resources mainly through Physics and Maths and monitor the impact and the use of the EW project in the local community. Furthermore they will install a simple photovoltaic power panel which they will receive before their departure in the Czech Republic, where they will be trained for this task as well. The project will take place in the summer/fall of 2006. The preparatory phase of the project will take place in English. The GLEN project team will be composed of one German and one Czech participant. For the German place, applications from Sachsen are particularly welcome.

5. Project: Informal Education, Mongolia

Vocational Field: Cabinetmaking, Joinery, Felt Handicraft
Field of Study: Pedagogics, Education Science, Social Pedagogy
Language: Russian, English, Mongolian
Number of participants: 2

As in other so called “countries in transition” there have been drastic political and social upheavals in post-socialist Mongolia. The macroeconomic economic policy has caused strong social polarisation. About one third of Mongolia’s population is living below the poverty line with upward tendency. Over the last years natural catastrophes put the mobile raising of livestock into crisis and increased the massive migration to urban areas. Around the capital Ulaanbaatar there are huge slum areas that lack a sufficient infra-structure. The Mongolian NGO “Alchlal” or “Child Development Center” works in these areas focusing on (a) support of poor families (financial basic aid, counselling and practical offers in order to increase the families’ self-reliance) and (b) basic education in an informal school. This informal school enables drop outs or left outs (who have never been put to school) to get an official degree. Later on these children and teenagers are more likely to be socially integrated and able to continue their education. The GLEN scholars will organize an interesting and animating leisure time programme with the students. Priority is given to the idea of participation and cooperative development of new ideas. Participants should either have skills in pedagogics or experience in handicraft such as cabinet making, joinery or handling with felt. Knowledge of Russian, English or Mongolian is required. The participants will work at the “Child Development Center” project area in a district called Bayankhoshuu at the outskirts of Ulaanbaatar. It can be reached by a one hour bus ride from the city center. The project will take place End of August to November 2006. The preparatory phase of the project will take place in English. The GLEN project team will be composed of one German and one Czech participant. For the German place, applications from Sachsen are particularly welcome.

6. Monitoring the Elections to Accompany Democracy, Republic of Zambia

Field of Study: political science, social and cultural science, pedagogics
Language: English
Number of participants: 2

“Good Governance” is an important factor for the allocation of development funds, because democratic states that respect citizenship and human rights are more reliable than states in a precarious political situation. Consequently, there was a step forward in democratic development for many states, though partly only on paper. Zambia is a country where policy is still strongly coined by the longstanding one party governance. Yet there is a democratic constitution and a civil society that is more and more participating in the political process. The “Foundation for Democratic Process” (FODEP) in Zambia supports this tendency on many levels. By monitoring elections and educating the public, the aim is to achieve a democratic consciousness and link the civil society with the political elites. GLEN participants choose one section of the process in the parliamentary and presidential elections that are appointed for the end of 2006. They participate in the FODEP information campaign and research for the report of the elections. Participants from the field of pedagogy have the possibility to help shape workshops or independently create ways to spread political education. It is important that the participants engage in the common pre-electoral work but also take initiative for one section of the whole process and specialize to deeply research and promote specific activities. The preparatory phase of the project will take place in English. The GLEN project team will be composed of one German and one Czech participant. The German place is already occupied by the self-proposer.

7. Education programs for women and girls, Republic of Yemen

Field of Study: Policy- and Social sciences, English studies, Pedagogy, Islam studies, IT, Human Rights, Education of Adults
Language: English, Arabic
Number of participants: 2

The “Girls World Communication Centre Sanaa/Yemen” (GWCC) offers education programs to women and girls, especially in the area of environmental education, health education and human rights. It has been founded in 1998 as the first language institute teaching only girls in Yemen. The GWCC is a non-profit and non-governmental organisation aiming to assist and encourage young women and girls to pursuit their aspirations and dreams. For this the GWCC provides them with the necessary tools for pursuing their academic education, a career within the local workplace or for being mothers of next generations and for being able to communicate globally. The basic instruments for imparting development political contents are language and computer classes. Special programs will prepare women for leading positions particularly in the economic sector. Beyond this, the GWCC offers different cultural and sportive activities. Fields of activities for the GLEN participants are the programming and the evaluation of the GWCC`s work as well as the documenting of the work in a newsletter. Furthermore the participants can contribute to the workshops/classes, introduce new methods, topics and materials. They can conduct classes (e.g. in English language topics related to human rights or alternative development policies) and should exchange with the local teachers and perhaps provide trainings for them. The participants need pedagogic experience, good knowledge of English language and basics in Arabic communication. Knowledge in computer and internet as well as experiences with Islamic societies is advantageous. The project will take place between September and December 2006. The preparatory phase of the project will take place in English. The GLEN project team will be composed of one German and one Czech participant. For the German place, applications from Sachsen are particularly welcome.

2005

1. Project: Protection of the Aquatic Life and Fish Resources at Lake Bosomtwe, Ghana

Number: GHA05/03-Fish resources
Vocational Field: Fishermen/Fisherwomen, Professional Fish Breeder
Field of Study: Biology (Limnology), Environmental Management, Fishery, Fishery Sciences, Water Resources Management, Sociology, Community Development
Language: English, Twi recommended
Places: 1 German participant, 1 Czech participant
Lake Bosomtwe is situated about 32km Southeast of Kumasi, the capital of the Ashanti Region, Ghana. It occupies a meteorite impact crater that was formed about one million years ago. The formation of the basin by an extraterrestrial body makes Bosumtwi a unique meteorite crater heritage site in West Africa.
The area is endowed with historical and cultural information. The lake basin reveals unique ecological features, especially in the aquatic, botanical and zoological environments. There are 21 communities located around the lake shore. The main sources of livelihood are farming and fishing. With the rapid degradation of the farmlands and subsequently decreasing harvests, fishery is increasingly becoming the only possibility of livelihood for a growing number of inhabitants. They are more or less uneducated in terms of adequate fishing methods and fish population management. There’s the strong need for a functioning network of all the fishermen at Bosomtwe to guarantee a successful, “lake-wide” implementation of all future plans and to provide them with education on fishing methods, establishment of protected areas (fish sanctuaries), fish breeding, fundraising and everything concerning them as responsible for their unique resource, the lake. During the ASA-project 2003 at the Lake, the participants did a workshop which initiated the first steps of forming a fishermen association modelled on the existing fishermen association at the Ghanaian seashore. The non-governmental organisation “Friends of the Earth – Ghana” (FOE) has been in charge of the development of the association from the very beginning and is steadily keeping in touch with the local groups. The newly founded NGO “Friends of Lake Bosomtwe”, represented by Dr. S.K. Danuor is the official ASA/GLEN-project partner.
There are different tasks for the ASA/GLEN-participants, such as the evaluation of the actual state of the fishermen association, the connections between the communities, the most urgent activities/achievements and the next aims. They must pick some tasks that can be implemented during the ASA/GLEN project period (3 months from July), for example starting a pilot fish breeding project (aiming at a sustainable fish breeding as a fishing compensation), educative and organizational workshops, finding of adequate areas for the establishment of protected zones etc. At the end there should be a documentation of all activities to establish something like a periodical (i. e. monthly, annual) report on the fishery at Bosomtwe to present it to potential sponsors.
ASA/GLEN-participants should be aware of low living conditions like no running water, regular electricity and communication faults and all disadvantages that come with a stay in a rural area in the tropics. However, the people in the communities are very helpful in any situation the participants should face.
The preparatory phase of the project will take place in English. The ASA/GLEN project team will be composed of one German and one Czech participant.

2. Project: Developing Skills on Girls Soccer, Kenya

Number: KEN05/02
Vocational Field: Organisation Management, Physical Education, Sports (Soccer), Social Work, Public Relations
Field of Study: Organisation Management, Physical Education, Sports (Soccer), Education, Social Work
Language: English
Places: 1 German participant, 1 Czech participant
The girls in Kenyan Communities have been neglected for many years and are lowly regarded more so when it comes to decision-making and development in major issues in the community. The girls in the slums are more vulnerable to this neglect and hostility. In Kibera, girls soccer has been neglected and no much attention has been given to it. For that reason, “Initiative for Sports and Social Arts” (ISSA) took the initiative in the year 2003 to organize the first girls soccer tournament in history of the Kibera slum. This tournament drew girls from all over Kibera slum where ISSA had a total of 18 girls teams. The event was to create awareness on HIV/AIDS where many dignitaries were attending. ISSA identified girls´ interest in soccer in the community and their interests to reach professional level in soccer. With this background ISSA is determined to form an all star Kibera girls soccer team. There is a need for girls to venture into sports as tools for leisure, communication, employment and create a forum for resolving issues that affect the girl child. ISSA focuses on recreational and cultural activities and other forms of arts to promote a culture of responsibility and involvement of the youth community in pertinent issues. The initiative envisages to link the issues of the slum with the policies at the national level. The youth of ISSA are challenged to facilitate a process of reviewing the gender roles and distribution of resources in the society.
The ASA/GLEN-participants will be involved in a workshop for new girls soccer groups, they will assist training and the preparation for fundraising. Besides, they will have to prepare and to organize the tournament which will take place for four weeks. After this event there will be the need to evaluate the activities. In general the participants will support the ISSA members with the empowerment of the girls and the promotion of the team. It is important that the girls feel together as a team and that they feel involved in soccer tournaments and activities.
The preparatory phase of the project will take place in English. The ASA/GLEN project team will be composed of one German and one Czech participant.

3. Agriculture and Innovative Education in a New Secondary School, Tanzania

Number: TZA05/04
Vocational Field: Agriculture, Education
Field of Study: Agriculture, Pedagogy
Language: English, basic Swahili recommended
Places: 1 German participant, 1 Czech participant
The Isango boarding secondary school is situated on the peninsula on the shore of the Mara bay of Lake Victoria. It is run by the Non-Governmental Organisation “ACCODEO”. The school has a long tradition which was nevertheless interrupted in 90s, when the school was abandoned for 5 years and almost turned to ruins. The effort to restore it has begun 2 years ago, nowadays the school is run by the association of parents. The school fee does not only cover the education, but also the accommodation and food for the students. There is a lot of space: 6 buildings in fairly good conditions which are used as classrooms, dormitories for the students, kitchen and dining room. But the equipment is very poor, moreover there is no electricity and running water available. More than half of the students are girls, the students themselves help with the preparation of the food, agriculture, cleaning the school area, getting wood and water etc. For 30 students there are six teachers, three of them live in the school compound as well. All teachers are young and motivated to build up a high-quality school.
There is a variety of fields where ASA/GLEN-participants can contribute. They can provide free time activities, help with the agriculture or even with the reconstruction of the school. They will be involved in supporting the teachers with new training methods. Thus, it would be useful, if the project was formed by two people with different educational and vocational background (education and agriculture). The participants need to be very flexible and creative, as the material equipment is very basic. Ability to work multidisciplinary would be a great advantage – a lot of work in various fields can be done there. All the teachers and students speak good English, the knowledge of Swahili would be an advantage in communication with other local people. The project will take place for three months in the summer. The starting time has to be arranged with the school staff.
The preparatory phase of the project will take place in English. The ASA/GLEN project team will be composed of one German and one Czech participant.

4. Project: Love for the Environment – Education About the Nature, South Africa

Number: ZAF05/01
Vocational Field: Education, Youth Work
Field of Study: Education, Environmental Studies, Youth Development, Social Work
Language: English
Places: 1 German participant, 1 Czech participant
The project will take place in the “False Bay Ecology Park” (FBEP), which is an area of approximately 1200 hectares located in Cape Town on the Cape Flats. The park supports over half the water bird population of the Cape Peninsula, as well as 240 species of birds and other amphibians, reptiles and mammals. There are various objectives of developing the FBEP, as the provision of a multi- functional eco-tourism and recreational area on the Cape Flats, the conservation and enhancement of the natural bio-diversity and the promotion of environmental education. The staff is also very busy on achieving a maximum exposure concerning the marketing. The “Zeekoevlei Environmental Education Programme” (ZEEP), a registered non-profit Trust, negotiated for the use of disused buildings in the heart of the FBEP. As the buildings have fallen into disrepair and been affected by vandalism, they are currently being repaired with the aim to start running educational programmes early in 2005. These programmes focus on environmental awareness, sustainable living, team building and youth life skills. They form part of the City of Cape Town´s Biodiversity and Environmental Education and Training Strategies that aim to sensitise the youth to the City´s natural biodiversity and help care for it. Since 2001 ZEEP already organized programmes in other camps. Some 6000 youth have benefited from nearly 200 camps in the past 3 years.
The ASA/GLEN-participants will assist with both developing and running environmental education programmes, as well as with the renovations of the buildings, e.g. painting, when not involved with environmental education. They will be provided with training in order to familiarise themselves with the FBEP and environmental issues in Cape Town, thus enabling them to assist with the environmental education programmes. The volunteers will be confronted with several topics covered on the camp: the natural environment, human impacts on nature, team building, life skills and AIDS awareness. The participants need to be passionate about working with children and have a love for the natural environment. A background in environment-related disciplines and education is ideal. However, as training will be provided, volunteers who have a sense of love for the environment and working with youth, even if not formally training in it, will be considered. The project will start in July and will last 3 months.
The preparatory phase of the project will take place in English. The ASA/GLEN project team will be composed of one German and one Czech participant.

5. Project: Without Chemicals – Sustainable Agriculture, India

Number: IND05/10
Vocational field: Agriculture
Field of study: Agricultural sciences, biology, agriculture, soil science
Language: English
Places: 1 German participant, 1 Czech participant
In the federal state of Orissa in the southeast of India are living numerous indigenous people. They depend on subsistence farming. Due to a bad quality soil and a lack of water the conditions for farming are complicated. For this reason people supplement their nutrition with food collected in the forests. For about four months per year this collected food is their main source of nutrition.
In the district of Koraput people have been cultivating their agricultural products without any artificial fertilizer. Nowadays chemical fertilizers are often applied to yield increase. This procedure is not sustainable as the soil gets less and less fertile and even becomes contaminated.
The organisation “Vikash”, which was founded in 1986, aims at helping underprivileged parts of the population to help themselves. “Vikash” is working on different levels such as education, integration of disabled persons, house construction, management of waste, water and wastewater and funding of small-scale enterprises. “Vikash” has supported organic cultivation in several villages in other regions. Now a new project is set up Koraput.
During their stay ASA/GLEN-participants can learn a lot about cultivation methods in the region. Furthermore an exchange of knowledge between the local population and the “Vikash”-staff is required. ASA/GLEN-participants have the opportunity to document the cultivating methods and the exchange process. Another task is to establish contacts to organisations in Germany and Europe that deal with the same topics. “Vikash” has several regional centres where ASA/GLEN-participants can stay and will be taken care of.
The preparatory phase of the project will take place in English. The ASA/GLEN project team will be composed of one German and one Czech participant.

(Děti sedí v lavicích během 3 hodin.) Jejím cílem je ji rozšířit a zlepšit učební program a rozvíjet potenciál dětí pomocí her a jiných aktivit.
Dobrovolníci též budou pomáhat učitelům s přípravou a měli by děti učit základům angličtiny a trávit s nimi i volný čas odpoledne.
