Keňa  KVDA/STV/07/B - NYABOSONGO BENA ACADEMY(07.07.2012 - 28.07.2012)

Age: 18+
Vols: 30
Extra fee: 300 EUR

THE COMMUNITY
The inhabitants are Kuria speaking people residing in the south west of Kenya.
Their main economic activity is farming, where farmers grow tobacco, maize, beans, sweet potatoes and other horticultural crops for sale. Cattle and goat trade also take place but the volume of trade has gone very low owing to the incessant cases of cattle rustling between the Kuria people and the Maasai and Kipsigis of the neighboring Trans Mara district. The area has low levels of literacy especially among people aged from 35 years and above.
BACKGROUND OF NYABOSONGO BENA ACADEMY
This school was started in 2005 with 23 students as a pre-school and currently it has 147 pupils and 69 for the pre-school, totaling 216 students. The School had 8 classrooms on two different plots with a borehole and 10 toilets for students and 2 for teachers. The school is run by a Parents Teachers Association and the teachers are registered by the Teachers Service Commission. The initiation of NYABOSONGO BENA ACADEMY came in handy with the many challenges that affect the community.
LOCATION OF THE SCHOOL
The School is situated at a market place popularly known as « Senta » situated along Migori Ntimaru road, next to Kehancha divisional headquarters.
STAFF: The School has a staff of 7 teachers
ENROLMENT: 147 pupils
PHYSICAL FACILITIES: The School has eight classrooms
WATER SUPPLY: Water is available from the borehole and seasonal streams
PHYSICAL FACILITIES REQUIRED: The School is in dire need of additional classrooms due to the increase in the number of pupils enrolled
THEME: FEMALE GENITAL MUTILATION
Female genital mutilation is a strong tradition in this community. It is illegal. But still more than one third of the women are circumcised and each and every young woman is subjected to the cut.
The church has preached against FGM for decades but in spite of the deep devoutness the priests do not have enough power over the souls.
FGM has nothing to do with religion; it is a so-called culture and tradition in certain groups. The practice is deeply rooted in views on chastity, transition to womanhood, “purity” for marriage and basically a wish to control women sexually. In certain areas the survival and fertility of the local community is assumed to be threatened if the girls are not circumcised. Many brave young girls who refuse FGM are regarded as ”unmarriageable” and become outcasts.
It is a brutal act, painful and has led to the spread of HIV/AIDS. Volunteers will be required to liaise with other non governmental organizations like Red Cross in creation of awareness to the community.

WORK:
Volunteers will work for six hours daily from Mondays to Fridays. They will be involved in female genital mutilation campaigns, construction of classrooms, brick making, teaching and home visits. Volunteers are advised to carry work cloths including rubber gloves, boots , sandals, rain coat, umbrella, torch, sleeping bags , mosquito repellant, sunscreen  lotion , donations of every kind and official cloths for special occasions etc . A personal first Aid kit is also essential.

ACCOM:
Volunteers will be accommodated in classrooms at the school with two separate rooms for male and female. This will be in a work camp set up where there are no beds and they will sleep on the floor on their mats and sleeping bags to experience complexities of development challenges in rural Kenya.
Volunteers with special needs like those who are physically challenged should alert KVDA on application so that efforts are made to accommodate them appropriately.

Others: Sun glasses, water bottle, musical instruments, Local food stuffs to be shared during the work camp, souvenir, gifts for friends or for the project
CAMP FEES
Volunteers participating in this project will be required to pay Euros 300 for a package of three weeks and this will include Airport Pick Up and drop off after the work camp, one day full board accommodation during the orientation day, fares to the project and back, food, facilitation, certificate of participation and  will cater for Administrative costs as well.
